Exploring The Depths: The MBARI Rover and Its Role In Deep-Sea Exploration and Discovery
Have you ever wondered what the deep sea is really like? The deep dark parts that we haven't reached yet but we know are there, with creatures and ecosystems we can only dream of? Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) Benthic Rover is looking to answer some of those unknowns and deepen our understanding of our beautiful planet.

The MBARI is a leading center for marine research. Specializing in exploring the deep-sea environment and learning about ocean ecosystems, one of their tools to complete this is the MBARI Benthic Rover, a deep-sea robotic vehicle. It is specifically designed to withstand the extreme conditions of the deep sea, meaning it is–and will continue to be–a great tool to answer some of the mysteries of underwater ecosystems.
The rover is equipped with high-definition cameras, sensors, and an advanced communication system–all of which allow scientists on land to gather data about the deep dark abyss that is the ocean floor. The rover crawls along the bottom taking pictures of animals and sediment in its path while collecting samples of sediment and marine snow (particles of organic debris), which is most of the smaller organisms' food source. These features of its design allow the rover to efficiently complete its mission and help scientists on land.
The MBARI rover’s mission is to help us answer our questions about the deep sea and more specifically how it is being affected by climate change through documenting and analyzing underwater ecosystems. During its explorations, the rover has discovered new underwater creatures and has mapped previously never-before-seen areas. By continuing to look at changes in the marine snow, scientists can gain more information for the future about climate change.

In the future, the rover will continue to document the deep sea, and as it advances our scientific knowledge, it will play a crucial role in understanding and mitigating the impacts of global warming on these vital ecosystems.
By supporting institutions like Monterey Bay, we can all contribute to the preservation of our planet and these new frontiers. More information on the rover can be located at Benthic Rover • MBARI and Homepage • MBARI.
